Thanks to all who came out for the Shoruq Debka and Hip Hop Tour, an amazing coast to coast 9 City US tour that began in Los Angeles and ended in Patterson New Jersey. Tree of Life partnered with JVP New Haven and Southern CT State University Women’s Studies Program to bring this event to over 500 audience members at SCSU and The Artists Collective in Hartford.
Additionally, Shoruq presented a performance and conversation with about 125 students at a Middle East Studies class at the UCONN Storrs campus on Thursday, and about 200 Hartford school students at the Artists Collective on Friday. The Hartford students made great connections with Shoruq teens from Dheisheh refugee camp. They eagerly shared contact information and will surely continue to foster this beautiful new friendship.
We are grateful for the work of Middle East Children’s Alliance organizing the entire tour. Learn more about their work here
A very special thanks to John Fussell for serving as lead organizer for the Shoruq visit to Connecticut. Many thanks also to Hazza Abu Rabia for arranging the UCONN Storrs visit; to Dollie McLean, Cheryl Smith and Yvonne Harris at the Artists Collective; and to Tricia Lin and Shelly Altman for organizing and hosting the event at Southern Connecticut State University. Huge thanks to JVP New Haven for your partnership and efforts. It is always a pleasure to work with you. A million thanks to our host homes, Becky and Bob Hurvitz, Sue and Thor Kayeum, Josh Blanchfield and the Scarborough 11, and Mina Mina and John Fussell – we are grateful for your hospitality. And of course, many thanks to all our many individual and labor union financial supporters, friends, and volunteers – we could not do this work without you.
The Shoruq team has invited us to visit the Dheisheh refugee camp during our September Trade Union Journey. We look forward to reconnecting with our new friends!
